Westbury is a rural village in Buckinghamshire, where the existing village hall had fallen into a poor state of repair with very few people making use of it.

Westbury had no sub post office, pub, shop or other community facility other than a small ancient parish church. The parish council reviewed options for repairing and extending the existing village hall, but with an increased number of potential user groups expanding the brief and with a successful bid to Big Lottery Funding, Hayward Smart were appointed to design a new multi-use village facility.

The primary intention for the new facility was to build greater community cohesion and provide Westbury with a much-needed community hub and meeting place. The new building has a traditional form, with the pitched roof extending out to provide a covered viewing area to the sports pitches. Stone and timber walls under tiled roofs reference buildings in the local area. Low maintenance finishes and high levels of insulation ensure a sustainable and efficient building.

Alongside the multi-function hall with bar and kitchen facilities, the new building provides changing rooms for the sports clubs, a community run shop and café. Westbury Village Hall is now a thriving central hub used by multiple village groups, and is looked at by surrounding parishes as an example of what is possible with a dedicated team of custodians and clear direction.
