Hayward Smart were appointed to prepare proposals for the refurbishment of the existing indoor training hall along with extensions to provide improved associated facilities for staff, clients and visitors. The existing training hall was over 30 years old of inferior and unattractive construction. It could be too hot in summer and too cold in winter, and as one large space was proving to be very inflexible.
Rendering the existing structure, replacing windows and doors and providing insulation to the walls and roof improves the appearance and thermal environment. Introducing sliding/folding screens ensures that the space can be divided down and used for multiple uses simultaneously. The new extension provides a multi-functional space for hosting educational visits for school children and voluntary groups.
The new extension is a simple monopitched building, which echoes the form of many of the new attractive buildings on the site, with render and timber boarding to the walls under a tiled roof. Its location helps to mask the training hall building from the main part of the site and is more in scale with the other adjacent buildings.
