Old Till House

A careful transformation of a 1970s cottage in Shipton-under-Wychwood, set within a Conservation Area and the Cotswolds AONB.

Previous piecemeal additions had left the house fragmented, with dark interiors, awkward circulation and little connection to the generous garden surrounding it. The project involved replacing a dilapidated conservatory, reworking the internal layout and introducing new extensions to better support contemporary living.

The design opens up the plan to create clearer movement through the home, stronger views to the landscape and a more sociable arrangement of spaces, while drawing in significantly more natural light throughout.

A new single-storey rear extension accommodates a light-filled kitchen and dining area, linked to a raised outdoor terrace, while a pitched garden room extends the linear gabled form of the original house. At the front, removing the existing porch allowed the approach and entrance sequence to be redefined, creating a clearer sense of arrival and bringing more daylight into the hall.

A restrained palette of Cotswold stone, oak and pre-patinated zinc ties the new interventions to the existing building, creating a coherent and contemporary home rooted in its rural setting and carefully attuned to its historic context.
