Lampetho

This striking, contemporary dwelling was constructed as a replacement dwelling on a site with far reaching views between Fowey and Par in Cornwall.

The existing house, a two storey rendered structure, was in poor cosmetic repair and the client had a clear vision and desire to create an architecturally significant home.

To fulfil the brief of creating a larger home than existed, the topography of the site was utilised to create a 3-storey building with the lowest floor partially buried within the ground to limit its impact on the site whilst fully engaging all spaces with the immediate site area and landscape beyond. Using flat roof design ensured that the overall height of the building is kept below the ridge height of the existing house.

The building is conceived as a series of layers comprising ancillary, bedroom and living accommodation arranged around a central private courtyard, which provides parking and garden space. A palette of local coursed stone walling and vertical timber weatherboarding is used on the external facades along with significant areas of glazing with overhanging roofs to provide solar shading. The new house is built to the highest standards of thermal performance and utilizes heat recovery/ventilation systems and green technologies.
