Brookside Cottage

Brookside Cottage is a Grade 2 listed detached property in the Cotswolds, constructed of natural stone under a traditional stone slate roof.

Built on an irregular shaped plot with rising ground levels to the rear, the house failed to engage with the surroundings and views were limited due to high window cills. Furthermore, the primary entrance was somewhat concealed on arrival giving the property limited presence.

Hayward Smart were appointed to resolve the above issues, and did so by proposing a single storey contemporary garden room extension, which relates directly to the garden, providing access to a new terrace and large areas of glazing providing views to the garden and fields beyond. A new formal entrance is defined by a curved stone wall and boarded Oak door. The extension also houses a small study and cloakroom.

Natural stone walling and stone slate to the roofs ties the extension to the main property, whilst the use of ashlar stone and bespoke kiln tried Oak structure and joinery provides a contract in material and texture.
